Most nonprofits suffer not from lack of passion and ideas, but from lack of strategy and discipline. Effective nonprofit fundraising begins when leaders have the passion and eloquence to articulate an important, exciting, urgent mission. But that fundraising will only thrive if there is a staff in place to pursue those funds with disciplined efficiency. By implementing automation and project management systems, standard operating procedures, consistent processes for tracking key performance indicators and other metrics, organizations can meet their revenue goals and achieve their missions. And the boards and staff who lead those organizations can contribute effectively during the day and sleep well at night. Too many worthy nonprofit organizations fall short of their potential, not for lack of good intentions or hard work, but because they lack the fundraising management experience needed to succeed. The Fundraising System was founded to fill that void.
For more than 30 years, Matt Bregman led the fundraising teams at large, medium-sized, and small organizations.
At the Brooklyn Academy of Music, he and his team raised tens of millions of dollars by increasing the numbers of lower-dollar contributors while also landing new five-, six-, and seven-figure gifts, grants, and sponsorships from individuals, foundations, and corporations. He systematized the processes for gift tracking and pipeline management; trained and guided staff; and worked closely with the Board of Trustees on donor cultivation, board recruitment, and trustee engagement in the fundraising process.
At New-York Historical Society, he led an effort to transition the institution from one that was dependent on a small subgroup of board members to one with a broad philanthropic base. He doubled the revenue from non-trustee individuals, foundations, and corporations and identified and cultivated new trustees and major donors. Simultaneously, he led New-York Historical’s Campaign for the Future of History—$175MM campaign to build a new wing of the museum.
Matt also held chief development officer positions at El Museo del Barrio, the Museum of the Moving Image, and the New York Public Interest Research Group.
Throughout his career, Matt has also provided consulting counsel and professional development training to countless other organizations and individuals. As an adjunct professor in CUNY’s School of Professional Studies he has taught graduate level classes on fundraising, and has also led fundraising workshops in New York City, Paris, Hong Kong, and elsewhere.
